The sequel for Mrs. Doubtfire 2 was underway just months before the tragic death of actor and comedian Robin Williams on August 11, 2014.
Fox 2000 studio revealed that there were developing a sequel to the movie, which would have involved Robin Williams, who had starred as a father who dressed up like an old woman to be closer to his children on its first movie.
David Berenbaum had reportedly met with Robin Williams in recent months and was working on a second draft of the script.
Original cast members including Matthew Lawrence, who played Williams' character's son Chris was set to be on board, including Lisa Jakub, who starred as Lydia Hillard. Both played the children of Williams' character.
"I hope they make the second as good as the first. The first was so good. It will be great to get the family back together," Matthew Lawrence had told TMZ.
Lisa Jakub told the Huffington Post: "I'm in the same boat as a lot of other people. I'm kind of wondering how they're going to come up with a storyline that's going to do the project justice. But I feel like if anybody can come up with something that is both hilarious and also very meaningful, it is going to be this team. We'll just have to see where they'll take the plot. Nobody has talked to me about the sequel, so I really don't know what I would say.'
Chris Columbus was also set to return as director for Fox 2000. "His performances were unlike anything any of us had ever seen, they came from some spiritual and otherworldly place. He truly was one of the few people who deserved the title of "genius"," Columbus said in a statement. "We were friends for 21 years. Our children grew up together, he inspired us to spend our lives in San Francisco and I loved him like a brother. The world was a better place with Robin in it. And his beautiful legacy will live on forever."
Robin Williams' sudden death casts an obvious shadow of doubt on the potential "Mrs. Doubtfire" sequel, but Hollywood often likes to 'reboot' hit movie franchises or proceed with sequels without the original stars.
