The long wait is finally over. After the August 15, 2014 release of the third film in the Expendables movie series, "The Expendables 3", will the star-studded movie exceeds box-office expectations?
The film features recurring cast members Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Randy Couture, Terry Crews, and Arnold Schwarzenegger. Also joining the cast's roster are Antonio Banderas, Wesley Snipes, Kelsey Grammer, Kellan Lutz, Ronda Rousey, Glen Powell, Victor Ortiz, Robert Davi, Mel Gibson and Harrison Ford. The plot shadows the acquisitive group known as "The Expendables" as they come into struggle with ruthless arms dealer Conrad Stonebanks, the Expendables' co-founder, who is determined to destroy the team.
"The Expendables 3" is the first to be rated PG-13 among the franchises. A dilemma arise in the release of the movie franchise about a month earlier its release, a pirated DVD-quality was illegally leaked and downloaded. Some studies show that piracy may seem to be an effective publicity tool, but for "The Expendables 3" movie, it created a predominantly damaging effect on the box office.
On its released date, "The Expendables 3" grossed $875,000 which did better incomparable to its forerunners. The movie earned $5.9 million on its first day which was far below than the opening day earnings of "The Expendables" and "The Expendables 2" which grossed $13 million and $10 million respectively. "The Expendables 3" film collapses with only $16.2 million gross in a three day total with $5.7 million and $4.5 million on its second and third day screening.
Critics mocked the film and fans mourn its box office details. "The Expendables 3" has undesirable reviews generally. Critics said that "The Expendables 3", like its forerunners, offers a degree of all-star adventures for classic action thriller enthusiasts, nonetheless it should have been a lot more fun given all the talents amassed in the film.
With the critical reception of fans and viewers globally, the box office expectations was never exceedingly met by the movie franchise. It is however frustrating for newfangled audiences, but it is extremely enjoyable to "The Expendables 3" avid movie fans.
