On Tuesday, the Food and Drug Administration announced that nSpired Natural Foods Inc. is willingly recalling several lots of peanut, almond and other nut butters on threats of possible salmonella contamination.
The food processing company is voluntarily recalling some retail nut butter products after routine FDA testing spotted their potential threat of possible salmonella contamination.
Some of the affected products are: Arrowhead Mills Peanut Butters, MaraNatha Almond Butters and Peanut Butters and specific private label nut butters sold under the Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, Kroger and Safeway brands. The FDA provides the complete recalled product list in their press release.
Salmonella are facultative intracellular pathogens that usually causing gastrointestinal diseases upon ingestion of contaminated food. It can pose serious threats and may be fatal in young children, elderly, frail and immune-compromised people. Signs and symptoms often exhibit fever, diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pain and nausea. These symptoms may last for four to seven days and be gone without any specific treatment. In occasional conditions, Salmonella infections may result in the organism spreading into the bloodstream and producing more serious illnesses such as infected aneurysms, endocarditis, arterial infections and arthritis and may cause death if the infected person is not promptly treated.
CDC reportedly said that almost 48 million people yearly are contracting food poisoning. And Salmonella infection is often the top cause of foodborne illnesses resulting to food poisoning. One out of six Americans is sickened by food poisoning each year.
The company is said to be currently working with retailers and consumers to remove and destroy products that were infected from the stores and warehouses. The products have been reportedly distributed across Dominican Republic, Hong Kong, United Arab Emirates, the United States and Canada. Also noted were the products available online.
The recall has been made according to the FDA jurisdiction. And consumers are given strict instructions to dispose the potentially affected products and may contact the company's hotline for a refund or replacement.
With the possible threats of Salmonella infection, the FDA currently released the complete list of recalled nut products.
