The United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and Ace Bayou Corporation declared to voluntarily recall over 2.2 million baby bean bag chairs following the death of two children due to suffocation, reports had said.
The US Consumer Product Safety Commission said that the zippers on the bean bag chairs that are made by the New Orleans Company, Ace Bayou Corporation can be opened and children can crawl inside, be trapped and choke or suffocate on the chair's foam beads. The controlled standard required non-refillable bean bag chairs to have closed and permanently disabled zippers.
Two children, aged 13 from McKinney, Texas and aged 3 from Lexington, Kentucky had reportedly died due of suffocation and were both found inside the chairs.
Following the reported incidents, the company then announced the voluntary recalling of the said products.
The recalled bean bag chairs have two zippers that can be unzipped and unfastened, including one on the external cover and the other directly beneath the zipper. The baby bean bag chairs that have been recalled with zippers that can be opened were sold in various shapes, colors, sizes and fabrics. They include L-shaped or round, fabric or vinyl and are filled with polystyrene foam beads. The bean bag chairs come in different colors as well and were sold in different sizes and dimensions.
The baby bean bag chairs that were recalled were said to have a printed tag with the company's name sewn on the chairs cover seam and were made in China.
The recalled bean bag chairs were sold in stores and also those available online. Online stores such as Amazon, Meijer and Wal-Mart and stores like Bon-Ton, Meijer, Pamida, School Specialty, Wayfair and Wal-Mart stores before July 2013 between $30 and $100 were the ones affected by the product recall.
Ace Bayou Corporation offered a free repair kits on its website that will inhibit the opening of the zippers. Consumers should check their bean bag chairs and promptly contact the company.
After the reports regarding the recalling of the baby bean bag chairs, parents and consumers should double check the products and ensure its safety features before purchasing, taking into considerations their children's welfare.
