Manny Pacquiao will defend his World Boxing Organization welterweight title against Chris Algieri on November 22 at the Venetian Resort in Macau.
And if Pacquiao wins against Algieri, trainer Freddie Roach revealed that the former pound-for-pound king could go down in weight - probably to 140 pounds or even to 135 to get big-money fights.
Yahoo Sports reported that Pacquiao and his camp are eyeing a showdown against World Boxing Council and World Boxing Association light welterweight champion Danny Garcia or Lucas Matthysse.
If the Hall of Fame trainer will have it his way, Roach said that he wants Pacquiao to challenge Garcia, who recently scored a clinical and dominating second-round knockout win against Rod Salka on August 9 in Brooklyn.
"Garcia, I think, would be a perfect opponent for Manny," Roach said. "He beat Amir Khan when I had Amir. I know he's a tough guy who comes to fight and he's a quality guy. I'd love a Matthysse fight, too, but I think Garcia would be the one I'd push for if Manny gets past this guy [Algieri]."
Pacquiao has not fought below 143 points since his third fight against Juan Manuel Marquez in November 2011, but Roach believes that the Filipino boxing icon will be more effective at 140 than at 147 pounds.
"Manny hasn't really carried his power up with him to 147, but he is a very big puncher at 140," Roach said. "It's a much better weight for him, to be honest with you. He would hurt guys at 140."
Going down to 140 could be a tough task for Pacquiao, considering the fact that he has been campaigning at the welterweight division over the past several years, but the 35-year-old said that he could easily shed weight to fight at 140 or 135 in his next fight.
"I could make either weight, 135 or 140, easily," Pacquiao said. "It would be easy for me. I am at 147 because that's where the action is in terms of the opponent, but it wouldn't be hard."
