Jim Kelly’s Cancer Status: The Former Buffalo Bills QB Now Cancer-Free After Recent Tests

The former Hall of Fame quarterback of the Buffalo Bills, Jim Kelly, was announced cancer-free after the negative follow up biopsies results this week.

Three months ago, there was a critical concern about the Buffalo Bills Hall of Fame quarterback Jim Kelly's cancer status as the cancer had returned on his jaw. But on Thursday afternoon, a group signifying the former quarterback released a statement announcing the great news that Jim Kelly underwent a series of biopsies in New York that presented no signs of cancer in his body.  

Jim Kelly is a retired American quarterback in the National Football league. He announced that he has been diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma in his upper jaw in June 2013. He underwent surgery and was reportedly had undergone a successful procedure and was cancer-free. However in March 2014, after a follow-up test, it was declared that Jim Kelly's cancer had recurred and that he would begin radiation and chemotherapy treatment. His cancer status had gained intensive media attention.

On August 2014, Jim Kelly's doctors had announced that there were no signs of cancer in his body but further tests should be performed. His doctors required biopsies on other areas of his jaw. And on Thursday, the results were back and came negative.

As per Jim Kelly's statement, the former quarterback said that the result is some of the greatest news he's ever gotten. He then added that it's been a long road and he is still not back to 100 percent but has a lot to be thankful for. His wife, Jill, posted a video on social media showing Jim Kelly calling his daughters about the good news.

Jim Kelly has been battling squamous cell carcinoma since 2013. Two weeks ago, the 54-year old athlete returned to New York City for a determination on whether the chemo and radiation had helped his cancer status. He was then told that the treatments had helped but doctors could not be sure if the cancer was fully eradicated until biopsies were performed. And the results were back this week and it was negative.

Although losing 51 pounds because of the treatments and still being fed through a tube in his stomach, the good news of Jim Kelly's cancer status was expressed by his wife and daughter on social media.

Jim Kelly also expressed his gratitude for his fans, supporters and well-wishers for the positive news of his cancer status. He stated that he is so thankful for the support and prayers that people shared through his illness. He also thanked his medical specialists and most of all he thanked God saying, "Most of all, I want to thank God. Without my faith and God's constant presence, there would be no such thing as 'Kelly Tough.'"    

Indeed, Jim Kelly's cancer status is remarkable news not only to him and his family but also to his fans. He might have scored a lot during his NFL days but his battle with cancer is a paramount triumph for the former quarterback.
