Brazil and Turkey advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup after defeating their respective round-of-16 opponents on Sunday in Spain.
Brazil leaned on a huge surge in the second half to cruise to a convincing 85-65 victory against Argentina in their showdown at the Palacio de Los Deportes in Madrid, Spain.
Led by their veterans, Argentina took a 36-33 lead at the half, but they failed to sustain the momentum in the second half as Brazil outscored their South American rivals, 24-13, in the third period to turn the game around en route to the blowout win.
Raul Neto was on target as he finished with 21 points on 9-for-10 shooting from the field, while Marquinhos Vieira added 13 points and eight rebounds.
NBA veterans Leandro Barbosa and Tiago Splitter added 10 points apiece with the latter grabbing nine rebounds, while Anderson Varejao racked up eight points, seven rebounds, four assists and two steals.
Meanwhile, Turkey also booked a spot in the quarterfinals with a come-from-behind 65-64 win against Australia.
Australia looked headed to the next round after leading for almost the majority of the second half. The Boomers built a 64-59 lead off a Matthew Dellavedova floater with 1:02 left in the game, but Turkey had answers in the ensuing play.
Emir Preldzic knocked down a three-pointer to help Turkey pull within two points with 48 seconds left in the game then forced a stop in Australia's next possession.
With the game on the line, Preldzic launched another long-range bomb that went in to give Turkey a one-point lead. The Boomers had a chance to win it, but Joe Ingles lost the ball, allowing Turkey to escape with the win.
Preldzic and Sinan Guler led Turkey with 16 points apiece with the former tallying seven rebounds, two assists, and two steals. Ender Arslan added 11 points, while Cenk Akyol and Karem Tunceri had seven and six points, respectively.
With the win, Turkey arranged a quarterfinal match against Lithuania, who scored a 76-71 win earlier in the day. Brazil, on the other hand, will face Serbia, who demolished Greece, 90-72, in their round-of-16 match.
