On Saturday morning, a 9-year old boy stole a vacant bus while it was parked with a running engine outside the transport yard. It hit another city bus and a parked vehicle.
A 9-year old boy had a lot of clarifying to do after stealing a city bus in Saskatoon. There were no injuries reported after he stole and managed to drive it for a couple of blocks before striking a curb and getting trapped. However, during that time, it hit another city bus and a parked car.
Authorities said that the boy vaulted into the empty bus while it was parked with the engine running outside the bus garages on block 300 of 24th Street West, nigh downtown. Due to the boy's age, there won't be any charges as per the police.
Two witnesses had seen the incident. Michael Pritchard said that the bus was left running with an open door and had seen the 9-year old boy riding bicycle just instants before. He was sitting in his truck in a side street waiting for his son. However, as his son drew near, he noticed something that instigated him to ensure a double-take.
Steve Pasqualotto, a CBC reporter, had also witnessed the incident. He was driving south close to Idywyld Drive headed for downtown when he looked over and saw the 9-year old boy at the controls of the bus.
The 9-year old boy who stole the city bus finally stopped at the corner of Idylwyld Drive and the 25th Street after getting stuck on the curb. Then witness Michael Pritchard opened the doors and pulled out the boy from the bus and waited for the police to arrive.
After the incident, the authorities reported that the boy hit two vehicles; another parked city bus and a parked car. No one was reportedly hurt and officers had confirmed that the boy was taken home and now with his family.
Due to the said incident, the city is currently investigating the case. City officials had stated that the stolen bus was being mended when the 9-year old took it on Saturday. The officials of the transit yard had also been evaluating a video tape that caught the occurrence. And based on the footage, General Manager Jeff Jorgenson of Transportation and Utilities Department elucidated that the bus was left running by a repairs person when the boy came into and stole the bus. He then stated that the incident was a clear violation of the policy and procedures of its safety protocols.
City of Saskatoon officials aren't deliberating any particular penal action yet as they continue their investigation.
Officials had assessed the damages of the incident where a 9-year old boy stole a city bus and had hit two parked vehicles. The reported damage was estimated under $10,000.
