A 30-year old New York man was indicted by federal prosecutors on September 16, 2014, Tuesday. As per the federal authorities, the arrested New York store owner has been charged for funding the Islamic terror group ISIS, trying to fuel them with jihadists and plotting to kill US troops.
Mufid A. Elfgeeh, a man who owns an upstate food store in Rochester, New York and was arrested on May 31, had funded the ISIS militants. The federal authorities also said that Mufid was also recruiting jihadists to Syria and plotted to gunning down US troops who had served in Iraq.
According to the federal prosecutors' indictment, Mufid A. Elfgeeh is facing three counts of trying to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization ISIS, one count of attempting to kill US officers and employees, two counts of having an unregistered firearm silencer and one for possessing guns or silencers in furtherance of a crime of violence.
On Tuesday, Mark Hosken, the public defender of Mufid A. Elfgeeh said that he had seen the indictment and will enter a not guilty plea when his New Yorker client appears in court on Thursday morning.
New York man Mufid A. Elfgeeh's federal investigation started in early 2013. A look on his social media account, Twitter suggested that Mufid didn't stand with his adopted country in fighting ISIS, as per an affidavit in support of a search warrant in his case.
Mufid A. Elfgeeh of New York allegedly posted on Twitter saying, "Al Qaeda said it loud and clear: we are fighting the American invasion and their hegemony over the earth and the people." In another message, Mufid professedly stated ISIS "will one day rule the world with the will of Allah."
A Justice Department statement said that a federal grand jury in Rochester handed down a seven-count indictment against New York resident Mufid A. Elfgeeh, following an investigation by the FBI's Rochester Joint Terrorism Task Force.
US attorney for the Western District of New York, William Hochul said in a statement that with Mufid A. Elfgeeh's indictment, the government demonstrates that it will use all accessible tools to disrupt and defeat the ISIS.
The three charges of material support to Islamic State each carry a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison, and the attempted murder charge carries up to a 20-year sentence. National Security's Assistant Attorney General John Carlin said that disrupting and holding accountable those who seek to provide material support to foreign terrorist organizations is and shall remain a critical national security priority.
FBI informants assert that the Yemeni-born New York owner of Mojoe's supermarket Mufid A. Elfgeeh desired to help support and supply ISIS with jihadists by setting up their travel arrangements and contacts under "going to the university" codename.
As per CNN reports, federal investigators are also probing whether he had his own plans to launch terror attacks within the United States. It comes after ISIS called for attacks targeting on US soil. The new threats surfaced this week, as an Upstate New York man was indicted on charges he persuaded three men to travel to Syria and fight for the ISIS.
The known terrorist forum post conveyed the threat includes a list of ingredients and instructions on how to assemble a pipe bomb, with directions to set the explosives off at sites like Times Square, the Las Vegas Strip and mass-transit stations across the country.
