A gunman has open fire and killed two people including himself in a shocking attack on a UPS warehouse in Inglenook, Birmingham, early Tuesday morning.
According to reports, the shooter was a 45-years old Caucasian male, who is believed to have been fired by the UPS branch on Monday, a day before the fatal shooting.
Police, who were quick to arrive on the crime scene after receiving several 911 calls from the area, say the shooter was wearing a UPS uniform when his body was discovered. A gun believed to have been used during the attack was found lying under his corpse.
The Birmingham Police Department have not officially disclosed the identity of either the shooter or his victims. However, reports from AP indicate that a UPS supervisor is part of the dead.
The police have meanwhile revealed that they are attempting to contact the families of the deceased.
Birmingham Chief of Police, A.C. Roper, told reporters that when his men got wind of the shooting they responded quickly and penetrated the UPS facility. However, it was too late as the gunman had already killed his former colleagues and himself before they could intervene.
Police reports indicate that the number of casualties may be limited because most workers at the USP warehouse, which also serves as a sorting center, had either hid themselves or escaped the building when the deceased suspect started his attack.
The police say an investigation into the fatal shooting is underway. Reports indicate that all surviving workers and other people present in the building during the attack are set to be interviewed separately. Officials say all the victims of the shooting will be provided counseling.
The management of the UPS facility, where the deadly shooting occurred at the start of the business day on Tuesday, is reported to have fully cooperated with the police during their probe into the regrettable incident.
