Rajon Rondo is being mentioned in trade rumors again, but the superstar point guard reiterated his desire to stay with the Boston Celtics in the long run.
Rondo, who averaged 11.7 points to go along with 9.8 assists and 5.5 rebounds per game last season, will be playing in the final year of his contract in the 2014-15 NBA season.
The 28-year-old point guard is expected to become an unrestricted free agent next summer, which means that the Celtics could lose him for nothing if he decides to sign elsewhere, creating speculations that Boston might just trade Rondo instead of losing him without getting any asset in return.
But in a recent interview, Rondo said that staying in Boston is his top priority because he wants to give back to Celtics fans, who have been backing him up through thick and thin over the past eight years, including president of basketball operations Danny Ainge and team owner Wyc Grousbeck.
"The fans, the people here, make me want to stay," Rondo said via Boston Globe. "The organization has been great. I can't say enough about Danny and Wyc. When I walk down the street, the fans embrace me from Day 1. Even when we won a championship, people don't just appreciate us winning. It's more of a thank you. It's a love for the game. These people here know the game and they care for it."
Rondo will not be available for the Celtics, though, when they start their campaign in the upcoming season after undergoing surgery to repair a broken left hand.
The eight-year veteran broke his left hand in a fall at his home, but several reports questioned whether or not Rondo is telling the truth about his injury. When asked about the talks about the real cause of his injury, Rondo laughed off all speculation about his broken hand.
"Am I under investigation?" Rondo said in jest via ESPN Boston. "Certain falls happen and you slip, and I slipped and tried to catch my hand. It wasn't like a banana [peel] slip. I actually almost caught myself. I landed on my knuckle on the windowsill in my home. That's what happened"
