‘Dracula Untold’ Movie Receives Mostly Negative Reviews From Critics

"Dracula Untold" is an American dark fantasy-action movie directed by Gary Shore. A few days before its US debut, the movie was released in 25 foreign markets and earned $21 million. However, the film received mostly negative reviews from critics.

Instead of focusing on Irish novelist Bram Stoker's 1897 novel "Dracula," the movie "Dracula Untold" creates an original story for its main character, Count Dracula, by portraying the story of Vlad the Impaler, who uses dark powers to protect his kingdom and family.

"Dracula Untold" movie depicts the story of Vlad III Tepes, a Transylvanian prince whose era of peace is threatened by Sultan Mehmed II, who demands 1,000 of his territory's boys, including Ingeras, Vlad's own son, to join the army. So as to save his family and kingdom, Vlad voyages to Broken Tooth Mountain, where he meets an ancient sorcerer, Caligula, and enters into a Faustian bargain. It gives the prince the power of 100 men, the speed of a falling star and enough strength to abolish his enemies. However, he will be suffering from an unquenchable thirst to drink human blood. This eventually leads him to embrace his fate as the legendary vampire Dracula.

In the film, Luke Evans portrays the title character alongside Sarah Gadon, Dominic Cooper and Samantha Barks in supporting roles.

"Dracula Untold" movie was released in North America on Oct.10, 2014 in over 2,000 theatres. It earned $1.3 million from Thursday night showings. On the other hand, the film received mostly negative reviews. While most critics were admiring Luke Evans' performance, as well as the story and visuals, critics were reviewing Dracula's characterization and pointed out several plot holes.

On Rotten Tomatoes, the film has a rating of 25 percent based on 65 reviews, with an average rating of 4.7 out of 10. While on Metacritic, the movie has a score of 38 out of 100 which is based on 28 critics.

"Neither awful enough to suck nor sharp enough to bite, Dracula Untold misses the point of its iconic character's deathless appeal," stated by Rotten Tomatoes' consensus.

The Daily News said that "Dracula Untold" is out-of-focus in laying out the rules. It also added that the twists offer some pity for the Devil that's thought-provoking to dwell on, however, "feels forced in this story." The Wall Street Journal stated that the movie is visually remarkable but "narratively shaky, borrowing heavily from a wide range of fantasy or adventure movies."

We have seen several cinematic portrayals of Transylvania's famous count, despite the negative reviews of the "Dracula Untold," the movie will definitely make the legendary vampire to rise again.
