Oklahoma City Thunder superstar Kevin Durant expressed optimism about his recovery from a surgery that repaired a "Jones" fracture in his right foot, but the Oklahoma City Thunder superstar said that he won't rush his return.
Durant admitted that his current situation is something new to him, but he expressed gratitude to the Thunder organization for helping him get through the process easily.
"It's definitely a different experience for me," Durant said on Tuesday via ESPN. "I've never been injured before, but the Thunder's been great to get me to the best surgeon, and rehab has been going well so far. Everything is progressing, and I'm looking forward to these next few weeks of getting better."
The 26-year-old superstar also pointed out that his morale is high at this point despite sustaining a major foot injury, saying that he is in a "win-win" situation. Durant said that the injury will give him a chance to develop his leadership skills, while also giving some of his teammates an opportunity to shine.
"I'm looking at the positive side of it," Durant said. "It's a win-win, basically, because I'm learning a lot while I'm out about the game, and my teammates are getting lots of opportunities because there are a lot of minutes out there to help the team."
Durant, who averaged 32.0 points to go along with 7.4 rebounds and 5.5 assists per game last season, said that he won't rush his return from the injury.
"I'm not going to rush it all," Westbrook said. "That's the one thing I don't want to do. I'm sure I'll feel better in two or three weeks, but definitely don't want to rush it and wind up hurting it even more. I'm taking my time with it."
Without Durant, Thunder point guard Russell Westbrook will shoulder bigger responsibility, but Durant expressed confidence that his superstar partner is capable of handling the role, saying that the 25-year-old guard is used to playing big.
"Nothing has to change," Durant said. "Just stay who he is and continue to play the way he plays, and everybody is going to follow. He's going to do a great job. I'm not worried about Russ. He may get more opportunities now, but you don't have to change what you do. He knows that. He's a smart player. He knows we all have to do it as a team, and it's going to be fun. I'm excited to see the team play."
