The Cleveland Cavaliers have one of the best rosters in the NBA, but the Cavs are not yet done tweaking their lineup as reports indicated that they are still interested in acquiring Ray Allen.
Sam Amico of Fox Sports confirmed that Cavaliers executives have recently contacted Allen to gauge his interest in signing with the team before the start of the 2014-15 NBA season, but the veteran shooting guard remains noncommittal about his future.
"The Cavs have spoken with the agent for Ray Allen recently, but if Allen has made a decision on his future, it remains unclear. The 39-year old shooting guard is a free agent after spending the previous two seasons with LeBron James and Miami," Amico wrote.
Sources also indicated that James, who played with Allen over the past two seasons in Miami, has been continuously making a pitch to Allen along with former Heat players James Jones and Mike Miller.
The Cavaliers reportedly told Allen earlier this month that there will be a roster spot for the 39-year-old even if he misses training camp heading into the new season. Sources said that while Allen remains undecided about his future, the Cavaliers are still going to be patient enough to wait for the sharp-shooting guard.
Aside from the Cavaliers, several teams have also expressed interest in acquiring the all-time leader in three-pointers made, but the Cavs are considered as the favorite to land Allen.
Meanwhile, Cavaliers coach David Blatt revealed that Anderson Varejao will start at center when they open their season against the New York Knicks on Oct. 30 at the Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland.
Blatt picked Varejao as starter over Tristan Thompson mainly because of his good chemistry with Cavaliers superstar LeBron James, who has been uttering positive remarks for the Brazilian center.
"That was more or less the idea of beginning with Andy just because those two guys are so good together," Blatt said of James and Varejao via ESPN. "And Tristan is equally as efficient in either case. So, that's more or less the basis, but it doesn't mean that Tristan won't be starting some of the games. I'm sure he will be. Just right now, that's the way we're looking to go."
