This month, a hunter found the remains of a teenager in the rugged outback of southeast Oregon. The remains seemed to be those of a missing Oklahoma teenager, Dustin Self, who disappeared last year after telling his parents he wanted to test himself against the wilderness like in the "Into the Wild" film.
According to Monroe News, Harney County Sheriff David Glerup reported Friday that personal identification discovered with the remains indicated it was 19-year-old Dustin Self of Piedmont, Oklahoma.
The Oklahoma teenager Dustin Self, whose remains were found after a year of his disappearance, took a journey into the wilderness after watching the critically-acclaimed drama survival movie, "Into the Wild." As stated by some reports, Self was obsessed with taking on the adventures the wild could offer him.
"Into the Wild" depicts the story of Christopher McCandless' journey into the Alaskan wilderness. He abandoned his promising future and gave up his $24,000 to charity. McCandless died after eating a poisonous wild potato and starvation. The film is a movie adaptation of the 1996 non-fiction book of the same title. It features Emile Hirsch and was written and directed by Sean Penn.
Because of the said film, Dustin Self abandoned his family home outside Oklahoma City to explore the wild, where his remains were found. He was described by his family as an urban child with little experience in the outdoors.
According to The Huffington Post, the skeletal remains of Dustin Self were found Oct. 7 on the north end of a far-off and rocky Steens Mountain, roughly 7 miles from where the Oklahoma teenager's backpack and pickup truck were found just off a steep dirt track miles from the nearest country road in April 2013.
As per ABC News, Glerup said the remains have been sent to a medical examiner for further identification but added that there were no signs of foul play and the teen probably died of exposure. The sheriff also stated that Dustin Self's license, credit card and a key chain identified by his family were found along with the Oklahoma teenager's articles of clothing.
Dustin Self's obsession with the movie "Into the Wild," has brought him the same fate, dying alone and in the wilderness. But now that his remains were found, his friends and family can finally have the closure.
