Manchester United settled for a 1-1 draw against Chelsea in their highly anticipated match on Sunday at Old Trafford.
Playing without star striker Diego Costa, Chelsea managed to take a 1-0 lead early in the second half after Didier Drogba headed a corner kick from Cesc Fabregas in the 53rd minute of the match.
The Blues looked headed to a victory against the Red Devils, but Manchester United managed to salvage a draw in front of their home crowd after Robin Van Persie netted a goal off a rebound from a free kick in the 94th minute of the match.
Manchester United boss Louis Van Gaal wasn't please with the result, though, saying that they could have won the match had they capitalized on several good scoring opportunities in the second half.
"I've said to the players we could have won -- but we didn't, and that's our fault," Van Gaal said. "When you can do that against the best team in this league at the moment, that is a good sign. I'm not pleased, because I still have the feeling we could have won today and that we don't take our opportunities at the moment.
Van Gaal praised his players, though, for their determination to score an equalizer when they were still down by a point during the injury time.
"I have seen that we could have won -- I'm saying that nearly every game -- but this is Chelsea, who are a top team, and we were at least equal," Van Gaal said. "The most pleasing thing is we are showing again we are believing in making a goal in spite of the result being bad. At 1-0 behind, it is fantastic that the players are running until the 90th minute to equalize or win."
On the other hand, Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho blasted the referee for booking defender Branislav Ivanovic for second yellow late in the match, which game Manchester United a free kick that led to Van Persie's goal.
The Portuguese manager also felt that they should have been given a penalty kick in the first half when Chris Smalling challenged Ivanovic from a corner kick.
"f I have to speak about the second yellow I have to speak about lots of things -- the penalty that Ivanovic should have been given, the accumulation of yellow cards, the throw-ins. I know I speak always with my heart and get in trouble," Mourinho said.
