Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo is expected to play against the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday despite hurting his back on Monday Night Football action.
Romo sustained back contusion during the third period of their 20-17 loss to the Washington Redskins, but returned to action in the final period after X-ray results showed no damage in his back.
Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said in an interview on Tuesday that Romo will still undergo further examinations, but he is confident that their starting quarterback will recover in time for their next match.
"We'll get the tests today, but we anticipate him being ready to go," Garrett said. "When we left the stadium last night, he seemed like he was OK, and we'll get the tests today to verify everything."
Garrett, whose team is currently on top of the National Football Conference East standings with their 6-2 record, said that he is optimistic because Romo was allowed to return to action on Monday.
"Obviously he was cleared to go back into the game last night, so we felt good enough about that when the initial X-Rays were negative," Garrett said. "But they want to do some more extensive tests. We'll find out more as the day goes on."
Reports indicated that Romo took pain killers before returning to the match last night. But like Garrett, Romo sounded optimistic that his injury is nothing serious after their training staff allowed him to comeback.
"My experience is that if I was able to play and come back in at any point, I was able to go," Romo said. "Obviously we will look at things tomorrow and see what it comes to."
However, Romo remains noncommittal if he will be available in their upcoming practices, saying that it will all depend on how he'll feel moving forward.
"I'm just trying to figure out how to get through tonight and tomorrow," Romo said after the game. "We'll figure out a way to adjust and move on through the week. We've got to get ready for Arizona, and it is going to come up fast."
The 36-year-old Romo has completed 165-of-242 passes for 1,998 yards with 15 touchdowns this season. Against the Wildcats, the 34-year-old superstar threw 17-of-28 passes for 209 yards with one touchdown.
