Eric Frein captured - Eric Frein, the man accused of ambushing and killing a State Trooper, has been caught and arrested by the police after a 48-day-long manhunt.
Police say Eric Frein, who is one of the FBI's most wanted fugitives, was captured on Thursday. Pennsylvania State Police spokeswoman Connie Devens says "I can confirm that we have taken Eric Frein into custody".
Eric Ferin captured national headlines over the past few weeks with his elusive tactics in the forest. He was allegedly apprehended inside an abandoned airport hangar located at the Pocono Mountains Municipal Airport between Hernyville and Tannersvile.
Although the fugitive was armed, police reportedly arrested him without gun fire. The suspect is said to have had knives and at least two guns with him at the time of his arrest.
Before going on the run Eric Frein allegedly ambushed a Blooming Grove Barracks on Sep. 12. where he shot and killed Cpl. Bryon Dickson. Another Trooper, Alex Douglass was fatally wounded in the attack. Reports indicate that he is still receiving treatment in the hospital.
Eric Frein captured the attention of the country's law enforcement arm after weeks of evading officials following his attack on the state troopers in September. Eric Frein is currently held at the same barracks he ambushed and killed the Trooper during a shift change. Since news of his arrest was announced, 'Eric Frein captured' has been one of the most discussed topics online.
The 31-year-old, who lived at Canadensis with his parents, was described by authorities as a military enthusiast and a self-trained survivalist. Eric Frein is also believed to be a trained marksman, who fought in Africa with Serbians. The FBI says the fugitive has studied Serbian and Russian languages.
Authorities are still investigating what may have caused Frein's siege and attack. In the past he has "made statements about wanting to kill law enforcement officers and also to commit mass acts of murder," State Police Commissioner Frank Noonan said.
Eric Frein's capture comes after a Barrett Township resident informed authorities on Tuesday about seeing the fugitive at Buck Hill Falls. Devens says the sighting was just one of the many that has been reported since Frein's manhunt started last month.
Last week Pennsylvania police announced that a giant helium balloon would be used in the search for Frein. But after a day of trying, it was stopped "due to the tree canopy and rugged terrain of our search area that balloon was not as helpful as everyone hoped it would be," Trooper Tom Kelly said.
Eric Frein captured the attention of the entire local police department while he was on the run. He is reportedly being charged with first degree murder and attempted murder.
