Obama Press Conference: US President Engages Congress Over New Military Force Authorization Against ISIS

Despite election night's blow to the Democratic Party, United States President Barack Obama held a press conference at the White House to discuss the results of the midterm congressional elections and significant issues like immigration, energy and the ISIS.

In Obama's speech during the Nov. 5 press conference, the president said he wants to work with the Republican-governed Congress on a new authorization to use military force against the vicious ISIS militants. Al-Arabiya reported Obama stated the world needs to know the US is united behind the effort, adding the US military troops deserve their government's strong support.

"I'm going to begin engaging Congress over a new authorization to use military force against ISIL (ISIS)," President Obama said during the press conference published by The Washington Post. "The world needs to know we are united behind this effort and the men and women of our military deserve our clear and unified support."

Obama also added it was too early to say whether a US-led military coalition is winning against the Islamic State militants. However, the president warns for an extensive campaign in the future.

"I think it's too early to say whether we are winning because as I said at the outset of the ISIL (ISIS) campaign, this is going to be a long-term plan," President Obama said in a press conference on Wednesday.

The US president also discussed Syria's civil war. On his speech at the White House press conference, Obama said the focus is not to resolve the nation's civil war, but rather to focus on areas where ISIS operates. As reported by Haaretz, the president stressed the US is working to get more stable, effective and cohesive moderate opposition to combat ISIS. However, its top priority is getting the terrorist group out of Iraq and Syria.

"ISIL is in a more vulnerable position and it is more difficult for them to maneuver than it was previously," the president said.

The Obama administration also mentioned the invitation from Iraq's leader for the US to strike ISIS targets there. And with the passing of a new authorization, it would mark a new stage for US military engagement in the Middle East.

The ISIS speech of Obama during the press conference came after the midterm elections where his party suffered substantial losses as the Republicans took control of the Congress.
