Keira Knightley is not new in appearing nude for magazine covers. However, her latest topless photo-shoot with Interview Magazine grabbed intense media interest. The 29-year-old English actress was photographed topless by Patrick Demarchelier as her personal protest against Photoshop-edited pictures.
Aside from recently appearing topless, Keira Knightley received media attention for her views on feminism which she expressed in the February 2014 edition of Harper's Bazaar UK. The actress explained that female artists face greater struggles in the film industry compared to their male counterparts. She also revealed that she was confused by the used of "feminist" in an offensive sense.
"I think it's great that the discussions are finally being allowed to be had [about feminism], as opposed to anybody mentioning feminism and everybody going, 'Oh, fucking shut up,'" Knightley stated. "Somehow, it [feminism] became a dirty word. I thought it was really weird for a long time, and I think it's great that we're coming out of that."
However, Keira Knightley once again placed under the intense media spotlight after she posed topless for a magazine as a protest to Photoshop. The actress told The Times that she demanded her topless shots be unedited so people could see what she really looked like.
"I've had my body manipulated so many different times for so many different reasons, whether it's paparazzi photographers or for film posters," Keira Knightley said. "That [shoot] was one of the ones where I said: 'OK, I'm fine doing the topless shot so long as you don't make them any bigger or retouch.' Because it does feel important to say it really doesn't matter what shape you are."
Even by Hollywood standards, Keira Knightley has been a constant subject for extreme scrutiny over her slim body figure. The Daily Mail said it is usually her defining point as she walked the red carpets or appear in photo-shoots as a young media star. But, the 29-year-old actress had just enough seeing her body edited in several magazine spreads and promotional posters.
"I think women's bodies are a battleground and photography is partly to blame," Knightley said. "Our society is so photographic now, it becomes more difficult to see all of those different varieties of shape."
In 2004, Keira Knightley's figure was controversially distorted on the poster for "King Arthur" where her breasts were edited to look bigger that they are in real life.
"They painted my t**s on me for the films, which is extraordinary because it's kind of a dying art form - in the past, they used to have whole sections of the studios devoted to bosom make-up," Knightley said. "And I loved it, completely loved it. Because it was the first time in my life I had big t**s, and I didn't even need surgery."
In 2006, Keira Knightley came under fire when she and Scarlett Johansson posed not only topless but nude with Tom Ford, who was fully clothed on the cover of Vanity Fair. The picture emphasized the gap the demands made for famous women and men in term of playing up their sexuality as well as gender inequality within the industry.
"The people who make movies, whether its directors or producers, or money people, look for things that they can identify with and if they're all predominantly middle-aged white men, and then what you see are things that middle-aged white men can identify with. And you don't get anything for anybody else," Knightley told Net-A-Porter.
But Keira Knightley is taking a stand now as she's in the best position to put her foot down over the Photoshop-editing her body. In her topless photo-shoot with The Interview, the actress's real figure and beauty was dramatically captured. She also emphasized that women should celebrate each other's shape and size.
Aside from her topless photo, Keira Knightley was also asked about fairy tales where she gave a very blunt and straightforward response.
"Why should you wait for some f-king dude to rescue you?" she said.
Over the years, Knightley has turned philosophical and uncharacteristically candid about her life as a Hollywood celebrity. And with her latest unedited topless photos, it mirrored Keira Knightley's intention to make a statement regardless of body shape and size.
