Carol Ann Susi - The actress who played Mrs. Wolowitz in The Big Bang Theory has died of cancer.
The 62 year old actress, who would be remembered for her distinct voice when she played Howard Wolowitz's unseen Jewish mother, died on Nov.11. after a short battle with cancer.
"The Big Bang Theory family has lost a beloved member today with the passing of Carol Ann Susi, who hilariously and memorably voiced the role of Mrs. Wolowitz," a joint statement from CBS and the executive producers of the sitcom; Chuck Lore, Steven Molaro and Bill Prady, said.
"Unseen by viewers, the Mrs. Wolowitz character became a bit of a mystery throughout the show's eight seasons. What was not a mystery, however, was Carol Ann's immense talent and comedic timing, which were on display during each unforgettable appearance," the statement also said.
Carol Ann Susi, who was born in Brooklyn to Italian parents, enjoyed a career that spanned over four decades. She starred in dozens of shows including Ugly Betty, Seinfeld and Grey's Anatomy. She also had roles in Mad About You, Cheers, and Just Shoot Me.
Carol Ann Susi's death has also been announced by her representative, who released a statement confirming the sad news. The statement describes the late actress as a "spunky Italian gal from Brooklyn."
"She was a force of nature who didn't suffer fools and was fiercely loyal to her friends. Known only to a very lucky few, she was a world-class culinary genius who frequently scored blue ribbons at the very competitive cooking competitions at Los Angeles County Fair," her rep said.
Carol Ann Susi role in The Big Bang Theory is perhaps the most memorable of her career. Even though she only appeared once, Mrs. Wolowitz's sharp voice remains ever present in the minds of fans.
During a Carol Ann Susi interview, she said she wasn't bothered with the fact that her character never appeared physically on the show. She also said that fans had been able to recognize her after hearing her voice.
