Johnny Manziel has yet to start for the Cleveland Browns this season, but Houston Texans coach Bill O'Brien believes that the rookie quarterback will eventually get his chance to shine.
O'Brien said in an interview that he studied Manziel's game a lot during the offseason before the 2014 NFL Draft, and he saw a lot of positives. While Manziel has yet to show what he is made off in an actual NFL fame, O'Brien said that the former Texas A&M standout will immediately make an impact when his number is called.
"We really enjoyed studying Johnny. We met Johnny, I think I met Johnny three times," O'Brien told The Houston Chronicles. "He's an outstanding young man. Just a hell of a football player in college. He's in a good spot. He'll get his chance at some point in time and, whenever it is, I'm sure he'll be ready."
O'Brien said that he studied Manziel's game because they also considered drafting a quarterback before they eventually decided to name Jadeveon Clowney as their first overall pick.
"We studied a lot of guys. We studied a lot of quarterbacks. We studied every one of them," O'Brien said. "And we felt that what we tried to do was make the best decision for our team, for our organization and that was Clowney."
The Browns are having one of their best seasons in franchise history as they are currently on top of the American Football Conference North standings with their 6-3 record.
Their success this season has something to do with starting quarterback Brian Hoyer's performance this year. The 29-year-old quarterback has completed 58.5 percent of his passes for 2,212 yards with 10 touchdowns and four interceptions.
But for Browns coach Mike Pettine, Manziel has contributed to the team a lot as well this season, saying that the 22nd overall pick in the 2014 Draft has been great for them this season.
"Johnny Manziel the football player has been great for us," Pettine said via Fox Sports. "He comes in the building, he prepares, he helps Brian out as far as his preparation as the starter, he works hard in practice, he works hard in the weight room, he works hard in the meeting room."
