Chuck Hagel nuclear forces shakeup - The Secretary of Defense is set to announce an action plan to reform the US nuclear force after a series of scandals revealed several lapses in the unit.
The Chuck Hagel nuclear force shakeup comes after the Defense Secretary ordered two reviews into the nuclear enterprise earlier in the year.
Two senior defense officials, who spoke to AP anonymously, revealed that the Chuck Hagel Shakeup will include the investment of several billions of dollars into the nuclear forces as well as major structural changes. The Defense Secretary is reportedly convinced that the problems in the unit stem from fundamental issues such as low revenues, weakened morale and lack of scrutiny.
Higher ranking officers are set to be put in charge of the nuclear forces. The Chuck Hagel nuclear force shakeup will also see several old military equipments replaced and other tools supplied to the maintenance crews.
Over the past two years, AP has reported on several troubling issues affecting the nuclear forces such as lack of professionalism by high ranked staff and low accountability. There has also been examination malpractice and inconsistencies in training.
While many experts say the top-to-down Chuck Hagel nuclear forces overhaul is remarkable, they have expressed doubts about its real effects.
"Throwing money after problems may fix some technical issues but it is unlikely to resolve the dissolution that must come from sitting in a silo hole in the Midwest with missiles on high alert to respond to a nuclear attack that is unlikely to ever come," Hans Kristensen, a nuclear expert is quoted saying by NPR.
Many critics have since pointed out that the country's elaborate nuclear system is redundant in light of the fact that the underlying conflict of the Cold War era has receded in importance. The fact that the equipments are old increases its risk on the country and its effectiveness in a real-life situation.
The Chuck Hagel nuclear forces shakeup is expected to deal with some of the issues, according to the two anonymous officers. "While our nuclear arsenals remain safe, secure, and effective today, the report tell us we must take action now in order to ensure that remains the case in the future," they said.
