A press release from WaterTower Music said Billy Boyd will perform "The Last Goodbye" as the end-credits song for "The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies." The song was co-written by Boyd along with its filmmakers.
Billy Boyd, the actor who portrayed hobbit Peregrin "Pippin" Took in Peter Jackson's "Lord of the Rings" trilogy, is reteaming with the director as a singer. His song "The Last Goodbye" will be part of the soundtrack for latest installment of "The Hobbit." According to Science Fiction, Boyd had also sang a poignant song entitled "The Edge of Night" in the last film of "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy.
Billy Boyd is a British actor and musician most widely known for the movies such as "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy, "Master and Commander" and "Seed of Chucky." As a musician, Boyd fronts a band called "Beecake," a name after his "Lord of the Rings" co-actor Dominic Monaghan sent him a picture of a cake covered in bees.
In "The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies," Billy Boyd co-wrote the song "The Last Goodbye" with producers Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens.
"I wanted the song to be a goodbye to all the fans who have been part of this amazing journey and to the whole world of Tolkien as it has been told in the cinema for our generation," Boyd explained in an Entertainment Weekly report.
"No one knows the world of Tolkien better than Peter, Fran and Philippa, and I feel incredibly touched and honored to be asked to write and perform this song, and to be at the start and end of these beautiful, historic stories," he added. "To once again work so closely with them has been one of the true honors of my working life."
WaterTower Music announced the release date and information for "The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies" soundtrack, which will be available on shelves and for digital download on Dec. 9. In an Indie Wire blog, the soundtrack includes music composed by Howard Shore and an original song by Billy Boyd that is suitably titled "The Last Goodbye."
Billy Boyd flew to New Zealand in September to watch an initial cut of the movie. In his song, "The Last Goodbye," the singer-actor grasped that he wanted to put an interjection on Howard Shore's score, and summarize the completeness of Peter Jackson's six-part screen voyage.
"We focused on not just the final installment, but moreso on this 10-year epic adventure. A song to sum up the six movies," Boyd stated. "We recorded in Wellington, New Zealand, at one point traveling to Auckland to Neil Finn's studio -- where we recorded some of the guitar. It was surreal to be in his studio, as he did the song for [2012's] 'The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.'"
Billy Boyd's "The Last Goodbye," which exclusively premiered on Billboard.com, will be the song for the epic ending of "The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies." Hollywood Reporter said the last movie in the trilogy will be released on Dec. 17.
