A shooting incident inside the Florida State University (FSU) shocked hundreds of students studying in the campus library. The stunned students fled and hid in panic. Early Thursday, a gunman opened fire at the library and wounded three victims.
During the shooting incident, the FSU Police Department officers confronted the gunmen and commanded him to drop his weapon. ABC News reported that according to Tallahassee Police spokesperson Dave Northway, the gunman refused to surrender his weapon and fired a shot to the police, FSUPD then returned a series of gunshots.
Northway added the police officers did not believe there were any other threats related to the incident. CBS News said a loud tone sounded shortly after 4 a.m. across the campus followed by an announcement that the school was "all clear."
The FSU shooting incident transpired just after midnight in the early hours of Thursday at the Strozier library, located on the Tallahassee, Florida campus of the famous university. Based on a report by The Daily Mail, students were evacuated from nearby dorms after being on lockdown, as well as the library. The students were told by authorities to exit with their hands up.
There was immediate information on what triggered the FSU shooting. Earlier, the university cautioned students of a "dangerous situation" on campus.
"*FSU ALERT!* Dangerous Situation! Main Campus - Tallahassee. Seek shelter immediately, away from doors and windows," the school's message said.
According to the students, who had been in the library, the gunfire shots created a chaotic scene where students either blockading themselves in parts of the library or taking cover.
Meanwhile, Florida State President John Thrasher decided to cancel classes Thursday for the entire campus, while the university itself would remain open. About 40,000 students are enrolled at Florida State University, which is the largest university campus in the state.
All the three victims of the FSU shooting incident have been taken to the hospital and one of them is in critical conditions. At the scene, 30 FSUPD officers were deployed. FSU News said Tallahassee Police has taken over the case from the FSUPD.
