FOX has recently announced the return of the sixth and final season of "Glee" on January. The much-loved musical series will stage a two-hour premiere on Jan. 9. The television series will air its concluding season for over 11 weeks and will end with a two-hour finale on March 20.
On April 19, 2013, FOX renewed "Glee" for a fifth and a sixth season as part of a two-season renewal deal for the show. The series' creator, Ryan Murphy, subsequently announced that the six season would consist of 13 episodes. It will be the final season that will start on January with a double-length episode and will end on March.
The shortened sixth and final season of "Glee" was announced by the network on Thursday. TV.com said Murphy's musical comedy series will commence with a two-hour debut on Friday, Jan. 9 at 8 p.m. The series will move to its regular new timeslot on Fridays at 9 p.m. the succeeding week. And then the show will wrap up with a two-hour series finale on March 20 at 8 p.m.
After the much-loved worldwide phenomenal series' ratings repeatedly slumps during its fifth season, FOX officially cut off "Glee's" final season episode count to 13. According to the Hollywood Reporter, in its fifth season, the ratings declined significantly from those of its early peak of success. The change came as "Glee," which is one of the lowest-ranked scripted series to get an additional season renewal after FOX's two-season surprise deal a year ago, was left off the network's fall timetable.
In April, Murphy announced that the final season of "Glee," which will premiere on January, would feature a "time jump" and would put an emphasis more on the original cast members, changing the focus from its previous relocated home in New York.
"The final season is really its own story and its own location, and while the New York stuff will be alive, the final season is not New York-centric at all," Murphy said. "It really [will be] a lovely, fitting season that ... dwells on the original people that were on the show and what happens to them and how they give back."
"That really is the last season. ... We'll revisit some of the new kids that came and went," Murphy added. "There's a return of the Jane-Matt characters in a big way. It's really interesting, a very sweet, satisfying ending to the story."
Though "Glee" may have started off as a huge success for FOX, its final season airing January will be going out silently and quickly.
