Bills game moved - The NFL has on Thursday announced the postponement of the game between the Buffalo Bills and New York Jets. The match that was scheduled to be played at the Ralph Wilson Stadium on Sunday will take place in Detroit on Monday night.
The Bills game moved comes after authorities in Buffalo declared a state of emergency due to a weather disaster. The freezing weather, which has affected all 50 states across the US, has hit the region hardest.
About 10 people have reportedly lost their lives due to the unnatural freezing conditions. Local sources say the Bills game moved was influenced by the fact that the team's stadium was filled with about six feet of snow.
"Due to public safety concerns in light of the ongoing weather emergency in western New York, Jets-Bills game has been rescheduled to Monday night at 7.p.m ET and relocated to Ford Field in Detroit," a league statement said.
NFL officials say the Bills game moved to Detroit will allow the team to practice and prepare for the encounter with the Jets.
"The lions' practice facility will be available to the Bills on Friday, and moving the game to Monday night will enable the Bills to practice on Friday and Saturday and have their walk through on Saturday," Michael Signora, the NFL spokesman said.
The storm, which led to the Bills game moved, is reported to have buried a large part of western New York underneath 10 feet of snow. Thousands of residents are literally stuck at home due to the wrenching freezing temperature.
The NFL is reportedly collaborating with local authorities and the Red Cross to help provide residents with supplies.
"We have been in contact with the public authorities, and we realize the importance of all public safety resources being available for the community at this difficult time," Signora said.
The NFL had come under widespread criticism for stalling to have the Bills game moved. Erie County Executive Mark Polocarz said amid the emergency it was inconsiderate for the NFL to go ahead with the game.
"We have roofs collapsing," he said. "If the NFL is pushing this game to be held, shame on the NFL."
The heavy snow fall, which started in the beginning of the week, has also caused the NFL to postpone a game between the Sabres and the Rangers to Friday night.
Along with the Bills game moved, the league's ruling body also announced that ticket and match day information would be released at a later date.
The Bills game moved will be televised by CBS in the New York and Buffalo district.
