California Flooding 2014: Drought-Stricken California Braces Flooding And Mudslides Threats As Major Storm Pounds The State

California Flooding 2014 - It has been the second day since the much-needed rain poured through the drought-stricken California. So far, the storm has produced few problems but flooding and mudslides still remain as concerns. Due to thunderstorms, the National Weather Service has issued flash flood warning for some California counties including El Dorado, Placer and Nevada.

On Tuesday, heavy rains poured in California causing some traffic issues across the state. According to The Los Angeles Times, the storm caused few mudslides and flooding reports. The National Weather Service said 1.5 inches of rain fell in downtown Los Angeles this 2014 breaking the Dec. 2 record set in 1961.

Despite fears of mudslides and flooding in California this 2014, the heavy rains brought some relief from a three-year drought the state had experienced. Throughout the state, The Columbus Dispatch reported residents and authorities kept watch on saturated slopes at risk for flash floods and landslides.

The storm has also dropped snow in mountains and it made signature waterfalls flow at Yosemite National Park, including the 2,425-foot Yosemite Falls, which had slowed to a trickle by mid-July. According to Sacramento Bee, the thunderstorms also caused power outages. Sacramento Municipal Utility District crews were working to determine the cause of a power outage Wednesday afternoon that affected nearly 10,600 Carmichael residents.

Aside from the risk of California flooding this 2014, there have been reports of multiple rockslides over the weekend. Accuweather.com said the Pacific Coast Highway near Malibu was closed on Sunday afternoon due to rockslides. Though several cars were blocked in, passengers were able to get out and no injuries have been reported.

Due to the storm that placed California at risk for flooding, traffic was snarled and flights were delayed in cities around the state. Meantime, Oregon Live said another possible problem that California coastal residents might face is a dense mass of trash that gets washed from the city streets into storm drains and then onto beaches after the major storms.

As the primary atmospheric disturbance causing the rain moves east into the Desert Southwest, the rain will start to lessen and become more dispersed overnight into Thursday. As said by The Weather.com, a weaker system will bring the chance for rain on Friday as well.

On the other hand, in California areas that see additional heavy rain, there remains some concern for mud and debris flows along with flash flooding this 2014, particularly in recent burn scar areas.
