It will be an ultimate box office faceoff this weekend as three huge movie releases will make its way to at least 3,000 theaters nationwide. It will be a battle between orphans, saving historical magic powers and a fantasy epic. This weekend, "The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies," "Annie" and "Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb," will rock the US cinemas.
While "The Hobbit" has already started its theatrical release on Wednesday, "Night at the Museum" and "Annie" will open on Friday. It will be a huge box office battle as the last installment of 'The Hobbit" franchise has already made $24.5 million domestically, Entertainment Weekly reports.
As the box office faceoff starts, movie forecasters have predicted that "Night at the Museum 3" will make a $25 million to $28 million range while "Annie," which is a reboot, will make at about $20 million. According to Variety, "The Hobbit" epic finale will face significant competition this weekend as Sony and Fox launched its pre-Christmas offerings.
At the box office this weekend, "The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies" will be the thrilling conclusion to Peter Jackson's saga as war began in middle earth, ABC News 5 reports. While "Annie" will offer kid-friendly fun and stars Quvenzhane Wallis as the lead young orphan who experienced a tough-blown life.
Meanwhile, the trilogy finale of Ben Stiller's movie, "The Night of the Museum: Secret of the Tomb," will bring a fun and educational journey as Larry (Ben Stiller) embarks on an epic quest to save the museum's magic powers, which comes from The Tablet of Ahkmenrah, before it will be gone forever.
Also among the movies that will surely make to the top list of worthy films to watch this weekend are "Exodus: Gods and Kings," "Penguins of Madagascar" and "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1." For smaller releases, Reese Witherspoon's "Wild" and Benedict Cumberbatch's "The Imitation Game" will also be expanding wide this week into over a thousand theaters, Yahoo! Movies reports.
Since Sony has cancelled the release of "The Interview" on Christmas Day, three wide releases including Disney's star-studded musical "Into the Woods," Paramount's crime drama "The Gambler" and Angelina Jolie's "Unbroken" will definitely make a crowd in theaters that will boost the Christmas weekend box office.
