At the recently concluded inaugural People Magazine Awards held Thursday at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, Kate Upton was named as the "Sexiest Woman Alive." The 22-year-old model turned actress was the first female celebrity to ever receive the title.
Kate Upton is popularly known for her Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition cover. She was also featured in the romantic-comedy film, "The Other Woman," alongside actress Cameron Diaz. Traditionally, People's "Sexiest" title are only given to male celebrity contenders. This year, CBS News reported that Chris Hemsworth was hailed as the "Sexiest Man Alive" while Kate Upton nabbed the first "Sexiest Woman Alive" crown at the People Magazine Awards.
"This is such an honor to me because sexy to me means someone who's confident and happy, and that's the person I always strive to be," Kate Upton while accepting her trophy.
The People Magazine Awards' winners were not chosen by fans but were carefully selected by editors from People and its publication sibling Entertainment Weekly. As reported by Entertainment Tonight, the inaugural event held Thursday night, Dec. 18 gave out unique awards including the "Triple Threat" that Jennifer Lopez won.
Aside from Kate Upton, the star-studded People Magazine Awards also featured artists Maroon 5, 5 Seconds of Summer, Gwen Stefani and Pharrell Williams, who all performed at the event. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Kevin Hart took home the first award of the night, which was the "Comedy Star of the Year."
Actress Lisa Kudrow was also honored with "Television Performance of the Year" for HBO's "The Comeback." While Jon Hamm won the "Television Performance of the Year" for an actor award. On the film categories, Jennifer Aniston and Michael Keeton nabbed the "Movie Performance of the Year" awards for an actress and an actor for their acclaimed performances in "Cake" and "Birdman" respectively.
Other award winners are - Nora Sandigo for "Hero of the Year," Mindy Kaling and Chris Messina for "On Screen TV Couple of the Year," Billy Eicher as "Breakout Star of the Year." Pop icon Gwen Stefani was the recipient for the "Style Icon" award while Kate Hudson took the "Role Model" recognition.
Young actress Chloe Grace Moretz was the "Next Generation Star," Karlie Kloss for "Model of the Year" and Jimmy Fallon for "Talk Show Host of the Year."
People Magazine Awards was produced by The Hollywood Reporter and Billboard's corporate sibling, Dick Clark Productions. L'Oreal Paris and Kohl's sponsored the event, which was a two-hour special hosted by Nick Cannon. It was broadcasted live on NBC from the Beverly Hilton Hotel.
