Iga Jasica Brain Surgery - A 19-year-old who woke while undergoing surgery to remove a cancerous growth in her brain asked doctors about her cats and how the operation was going.
Reports from the Daily Mail UK indicate that the incident happened in southwest Poland when Iga Jasica was undergoing brain surgery at the Central Clinical Hospital in Katowice.
Parts of Iga Jasica's brain had been removed and neurosurgeons were about to remove the cancerous growth when she suddenly regained consciousness and spoke.
"I can't remember much but the doctor said he talked to me about cats, which I love," Iga Jasica said after the operation, which is said to have gone smoothly."I missed Christmas because of this operation but it is the best present I could have had as I am now feeling great."
According to the Mirror, Iga Jasica regained consciousness after the anesthetic that she had been given prior to the operation wore off half way into the critical procedure.
"Despite coming round she didn't feel anything and was never in danger," said Neurosurgeon Professor David Larysz. He explained that the teenager could not feel any pain while awake with parts of her brain removed.
According to Fox News, Polish doctors are currently investigating if the anesthetic had been administered improperly. However, experts are of the opinion that it is possible the operation caused her to gain consciousness, even though the anesthetic was properly administered.
Some experts say Iga Jasica being awake during brain surgery to remove a growth (tumor) is the norm rather than exception. Reports indicate that neurosurgeons may keep a patent sedated but awake during a brain surgery so as to avoid damaging critical parts of the brain.
