Prince Albert of Monaco and wife Charlene are proud parents of lovely twins. And on Wednesday, Jan. 7 the royal couple introduced their heir and heiress at the balcony of Palais Princier in Monaco. The royals welcomed their children on Dec. 10, 2014.
For the very first time, Monaco and the world caught a glimpse of Prince Albert and Princess Charlene's four-week-old twins, Prince Jacques Honoré Rainier and Princess Gabriella Thérèse Marie. According to The Daily Mail, the newborn twins were welcomed with elated cheers from Monaco's royal subjects who had assembled at the palace to see them.
During the twins' first public appearance, 36-year-old Charlene cradled Princess Grabriella while 56-year-old Prince Albert held his son, Prince Jacques, who will reportedly be Monaco's next successor. Us Weekly reported that in Monaco's Salic law, male heirs are favored to be next in line to the throne before their sisters.
As thousands gather to meet the royal twins, Prince Albert of Monaco and Charlene were joined by the entire royal family in introducing their children on the balcony of the palace. Aside from the royal twins, it was also Princess Charlene's first public appearance since November, during Monaco's National Day.
Because of the twins' introduction, Jan. 7, Wednesday, was declared as a public holiday in Monaco.
Meanwhile, Princess Charlene, who gave birth to the twins on Dec. 10 at the Princess Grace Hospital via caesarean section, said the babies were born two weeks early but stressed that she felt delighted upon hearing them cry, Hello magazine reported.
"I was obviously a bit overwhelmed with emotion," she said. "Every second with them is magical. I look forward to spending more time in their presence."
"They are beautiful, adorable, I'm crazy in love with them," Princess Charlene added.
The birth of the twins has changed Monaco's order of the throne's succession. Prior to their birth, Prince Albert's sister, Princess Caroline is next in line. But since male descendants are favored, Prince Jacques will be the ruler of Monaco and will be known as His Serene Highness The Hereditary Prince of Monaco, Marquis of Baux.
Jacques will also inherit an estimated $1 billion wealth along with leadership of the Grimaldi clan, which has ruled Monaco since the 13th century. While Princess Gabriella has the title of Her Serene Highness The Countess of Carladès.
The twins are Princess Charlene's first children while for Prince Albert of Monaco, they are his third after his two children from previous relationship. Since the prince's first two kids were born out of wedlock they're not eligible for the throne.
