Good news "Fifty Shades of Grey" fans! Universal Pictures seems to be planning on releasing an NC-17 version of the film. But is this really going to push through? Some fans were upset when the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) gave the highly-anticipated erotic movie an R rating.
"Fifty Shades of Grey's" R rating means that there will only be limited adult content to be shown in the movie compared to what is previously expected. However, some fans are quite hopeful that an NC-17 version of the film will hit theaters weeks after the release of the R rated version.
In 2013, producer Dana Brunetti had thought of releasing the Sam Taylor-Johnson's "Fifty Shades of Grey" in both R and NC-17 versions, Collider revealed.
"This is just my opinion and this doesn't mean this is going to happen, but I always thought it would be really cool if we released the R version and then we had an NC-17 version that we released a few weeks later," Brunetti stated. "So everybody could go and enjoy the R version, and then if they really wanted to see it again and get a little bit grittier with it then have that NC-17 version out there as well."
"It'd be great for the studio too because they'd get a double dip on the box office," the producer added. "What we're kind of hearing from the fans is they want it dirty, they want it as close as possible [to the book]. We want to keep it elevated, but also give the fans what they want."
However, at the red carpet of the 2015 Golden Globes on Sunday, Jan. 11, Brunetti revealed that the NC-17 version of the "Fifty Shades of Grey" will just remain unreal.
"No, I got trouble for that," Brunetti answered when MTV News asked if an NC-17 version of the "Fifty Shades of Grey" will be released. "It was just an idea that I had... That was never the plan. But I still think that it's a cool idea, but I'll never go getting myself in trouble again."
The movie producer also talked about the film's "unusual" R rating. He said he's also confused by it.
"I have no idea what they're referring to," he said. "I'll be interested in hearing what everybody thinks the unusual behavior is, but first, when I saw it, I was like, 'Did they do something different to the film since the last time I watched it?' But either I'm too used to it, or it's just unusual."
Meanwhile, "Fifty Shades of Grey" hits theaters on Feb. 13, in time for Valentine's Day. It features Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson as Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele, respectively.
