45-Foot Icicle - An Illinois family have been turning heads after creating a magnificent 45-Foot icicle on their front yard in memory of their late father who loved icicles.
Katherine Ragel of St. Elom in south-central Illinois and her son Garrick Moreland created the giant 45-Foot Icicle after climbing a tree and letting the hose run for a week when temperatures dropped.
"You've got a one shot deal," Moreland said about the careful process of creating an icicle this big. "Everything has to align just right for it to work."
According to reports, the family created the 45-Foot icicle with a statue of Queen Elsa at the base in honor of the Disney film Frozen.
Ragel says the Queen Elsa's statue was placed under a plexiglass ceiling so it would not get lost under the ice.
Ragel said the 45-Foot icicle, which has people stopping and starring, was created mainly as a tribute to her late husband Alan, who loved icicles and used to build smaller ones along their driveway. She added that about five years ago, Alan had Moreland climb a tree to create an icicle like the one they made on their front yard.
"We're still carrying this on the best we can," Ragel said. Alan always liked to do something unique. So he'd love all the traffic we're getting. I'm sure he's looking down and smiling on it."
However, Ragel is worried at the rate and manner which some drivers are stopping to admire the 45-Foot icicle that stands impressively just along highway 7, south of St. Elmo.
"I'm kind of worried about an accident because the vehicles will literally stop in the middle of the road," Ragel said.
