Naya Rivera Regrets ‘Showering’ Comments After Sparking Social Media Backlash

Naya Rivera has expressed her apologies after her controversial "showering" comments on ABC's "The View" sparked a major social media backlash. According to E! News, the comments made by the "Glee" actress was about her personal theory about showering and race during her stint as a guest host on the ABC show Tuesday.

"I have to say I have a theory about showering, [which] is that I think that white people shower a lot more than ethnics," Naya Rivera commented after co-host Nicole Wallace admitted that she showers three times a day. "I feel like showering more than once a day or every day is such a white people thing."

The show's live studio audience and the co-hosts were both stunned by Naya Rivera's comments. ABC News cited that Rosie O'Donnell even said that there was an African-American woman who was about to have a "heart attack."

However, Naya Rivera clarified her statement. She insisted that the comment was based on her personal observations since her half-black, half-Puerto Rican mother showers daily. Despite the actress' explanation, several people took to social media and expressed their sentiments about Rivera's racist comments thus ensuing an online outrage.

"Naya Rivera is a filthy racist pass the word!!!" one user tweeted. While another wrote, "@NayaRivera Actually, showering every day is a hygiene thing, not a 'white people' thing. I guess it's ok to be racist when you're not white."

The following day on the show, the 28-year-old singer-actress, who is also married to a white man [Ryan Dorsey], addressed the controversy ignited by her joke.

"Yesterday we were talking about a study that says you're supposed to shower once or twice every three days," Rivera said. "I had an opinion on it that was supposed to be a joke. Apparently it didn't go over so well."

"I can say that I am now married to a white man and he showers a lot," she added. "Like, a lot -- two, three times a day. I'm like, 'What are you doing?'"

Naya Rivera also added on Wednesday that the comments she made was supposed to be a joke and apologized for the people she offended. But she also expressed her excitement when her comments made a buzz on the Internet. Furthermore, she attempted to do some damage control by backing her claims with recent studies.

"A study says, dermatologist say you are only supposed to shower once or twice every three days," she said, adding, "so I'm right on the mark."

Because of Naya Rivera's showering comments, she posted an apology on Twitter on Tuesday.

"When you get out of the shower today, get a sense of humor. Love ya!" the "Glee" star tweeted.
