Tammy Jo Alexander Webslueths - The body of a teenage girl, who was found dead in a New York cornfield on 10 Nov. 1979, has been identified by authorities nearly four decades after she was killed.
Tammy Jo Alexander, 16, was identified after a friend called in to report her missing last year, according to ABC Action News. The case of the dead Jane Doe, which saw the police follow hundreds of leads, was finally settled after a blood test from Alexander's stepsister Sharon Nelson confirmed her identity.
"She can be properly remembered and hopefully they'll be able to bring her killer to justice," Sheriff Al Neinhuis said.
The FBI is expected to officially announce that the body of Tammy Jo Alexander has been identified at a press conference later today.
Alexander got missing from Brooksville, Florida. Reports indicate that she was twice, once shot in the head from the back. Officials have not identified any suspect in the gruesome murder that remained an unsolved mystery for many years. It is unclear why Alexander was not reported missing by her family, but experts say the identification of her body may turn up some new leads about her killer. It is also unclear how she wound up in a completely different state.
Alexander's case represented a strong challenge for the local police. Former Livingston County Sheriff John York, who investigated the case in the seventies, explains that the lack of any clues made it seem as though the body "just dropped there from nowhere."
