Fashion enthusiasts and of course, the male species are waiting for the new Sports Illustrated (SI) cover 2015 swimsuit issue. And this year, the publication made history for featuring plus-size model along with skinny ones. Though some have praised the magazine for its bold and daring move, other criticized its "unrealistic standards."
The criticisms for the new Sports Illustrated cover 2015 swimsuit issue came after the magazine launched a paid advertisement featuring a plus-size model while its celebrated cover features a skinny young model with airbrushed body.
It's official! Sport Illustrated revealed 24-year-old Hannah Davis as the magazine's 2015 Swimsuit issue cover girl. Davis was born in the US Virgin Islands. Over the years, she has gained popularity for being the Yankees legend Derek Jeter's girlfriend. The cover was photographed by Ben Watts at Tennessee's picturesque Blackberry Farm. It also marked Davis' third magazine appearance.
Aside from Davis, plus-size model Robyn Lawley is also featured as one of the seven "rookies" in the swimsuit edition 2015, CNN reported. Though just a size 12, Lawley's size is already considered a "plus-size" in the fashion world.
Moreover, Gothamist learned Swimsuits for All has an advertisement featuring another plus-size model Ashley Graham. Though the photo isn't part of the SI's editorial content, it will surely steal the readers' attention.
"The celebration of curves that we are witnessing right now is so important," Swimsuits for All's CEO Moshe Laniado said via email about the attention his campaign is getting. "Tastes and body types change over time and curves have never been more 'in'."
Though SI has been commended for its move in featuring plus-size models on their 2015 swimsuit issue, the new Sports Illustrated cover featuring Hannah Davis has sparked controversy. The criticisms came after Davis was photographed seductively tugging her bikini bottom too low. According to the Washington Post, the shot was more suitable for Playboy. While Bustle.com asked if the image goes "too far."
"I can't decide if I think it's vulgar. She is pulling at her bottoms and her lower lady parts are barely covered up," the reporter wrote. "There's no question about whether or not she gets a Brazilian wax, which means that very little is left to the imagination. I've often said that sheer sexiness is about what you can't see, not about what you can see. In this case, you can almost see too much."
So, what do you think of the new Sports Illustrated cover? Is it sexy or skanky? SI's 2015 swimsuit issue will be available online on Monday with the print edition hitting newsstands on Tuesday.
