Megan Huntsman - A Utah mother of three, who was arrested last year after the bodies of several babies were recovered from the garage of a that house she used to live in, has admitted her culpability in the shocking case.
Megan Huntsman, 39, pleaded guilty to six counts of murder in a Utah court on Thursday. Reports indicate that although seven bodies were recovered from her home, one of the babies was determined to have been still born.
Huntsman ex-husband Darren West reportedly discovered one of the babies while he was cleaning the garage of a property she used to stay in Pleasant Grove. A police search later led to the discovery of the other babies.
Huntsman has revealed that she murdered the babies between 1996 and 2008. She claims to have been addicted to methamphetamine and did not want to be burdened by the responsibility of caring for the babies. Huntsman revealed that she suffocated or strangled the babies right after they were born and wrapped them in a shirt or towel, before putting it in a plastic bag and then into a cardboard box.
West, who found the babies in cardboard boxes, has been determined to be the father of the dead babies. West has not commented on the incident since Huntsman was arrested last year. He had reportedly just come out from jail after spending nearly a decade in incarceration for possession of methamphetamine when he found the dead babies. It is unclear why Huntsman was storing the bodies of the babies.
Prior to her hearing on Thursday, reports emerged that Huntsman's attorney and prosecutors had reached an agreement that will see her take a plea deal. Despite this, after the hearing today, Utah County Attorney Jeff Buhman told the press that "We'll be shocked if she ever gets out."
The discovery of the dead babies sent shockwaves through Pleasant Grove last year. Many neighbors of Huntsman described her as a nice person. "I've had a few shocks in my life, but this one was a huge one," Aaron Hawker said.
Huntsman is scheduled to be sentenced on April 20th.
