New York City No Murders 11 Days: Officials Mark Record 11 Days Without Killings In The Big Apple

New York City No Murder 11 Days - Authorities in New York are celebrating the increasingly low level of crime and violence in the city as Friday officially marks a new record of 11 days without any murder being reported.

New York Experts say after crime rates reached a peak in the city in the 80s - with the proliferation of drug rings - it has slowly dropped through the years. The new record of 11 days without any murders in New York City is the longest period without a killing being reported since the New York Police Department (NYPD) started using its current crime tracking system in 1994.

The previous record for the longest period without any murder was chalked in 2014; for 10 days between Feb. 13th and 22nd, no report of a killing was entered into the police record.

In the entire year, there were only 328 recorded killing, down from 335 in 2013. Also, just 105,428 major crimes were reported in New York City last year, compared to about 110,728 cases in the previous year.

Mayor Bill de Blasio, who has often trumpeted the success of the NYPD in reducing crime, said the new record is the result of the hardworking men and women in the force.

"This extraordinary streak of safety over the past several days is testament to the hard work of the men and women of the NYPD, and further evidence that New York City is the safest big city in America," Mayor de Blasio said in statement released on Wednesday.

He noted that the latest New York City record of 11 days without murders is proof that police and local communities can work together. Since the death of Eric Garner at the hands of NYPD officers and the subsequent failure of the judicial system to indict officer Daniel Pantaleo for the incident, there has been somewhat of a rift between the mayor, the NYPD and some sections of the city's African-American communities.

Nonetheless, the mayor has revealed his intention to continue to work closely with the NYPD. "Our administration is committed to keeping crime at historically low levels, building stronger relationships between police and communities across our city, and strengthening support for our officers," Mayor de Blasio said.

Fingers crossed, the ongoing streak of no murders in New York City will not end today, the 11th day.
