Erskine College Volleyball - The administrators of a private Christian school in South Carolina have been on the receiving end of a barrage of criticisms after the school's board of trustees denounced homosexuality.
On Feb. 20, the Board of Trustees of Erskine College published a statement that said "We believe the Bible teaches that monogamous marriage between a man and a woman is God's intended design for humanity and that sexual intimacy has its proper place only within the context of marriage."
Reports indicate that Erskine College is closely tied with the Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church. While there may be similar policies in other conservative schools across the country, the fact that this policy is being made after two Erskine College volleyball players confessed to being gay has raised some questions.
One of the Erskine College students who came out as gay last year Juan Varona, has told the press that the new policy made him "surprise[d]" and "disappointed" because he has not received bad treatment at school."It just made me sad and worried for other gay people who might be struggling with confidence to come out," he said.
"Erskine recognizes the complexity of current issues regarding sexual morality, marriage, and other expressions of human sexuality such as same-sex attraction, gender identity, and sex outside the covenant of marriage. Therefore, Erskine community is advised to practice humility and prayerfulness when engaging in any conversations or other actions related to these topics. Erskine's conduct policies and procedures seek to uphold biblical standards, promote repentance and grace, and point people to Jesus Christ," the school's statement reads.
Following the backlash of this statement, the administrators at Erskine College have released a post to explain the context for their statement. In the post, the administrators have sought to explain that their statement on human sexuality was meant to inspire dialogue. "This statement describes a position. It does not prescribe a policy and does not 'ban' any individual or class of individuals from attending Erskine. No students have been asked to leave Erskine based on this statement," the post reads.
