Students at Sparta Elementary School in Belton, Texas got the opportunity to interact with career men and women last Friday. The school hosted an interactive Career Day for the children. Students were told to come to school dressed in their future career gear as they learned about various career choices.
5th grade teacher, Carlette Meyer said the career day gave students the opportunity to learn about careers they may not have even considered prior to last Friday.
"They are seeing everything from nurses to farmers," said Mayer, "I think it opens them up to things they might not have thought about before. Most of them want to be football players or movie stars, but this maybe gives them ideas about something they might have never thought of before."
The children were able to hear about careers such as being a farmer, police officer, fire fighter, park ranger, water department employee, and many more. Accompanied by professionals from all around Belton, were also parents of students, who also came in and shared their professional backgrounds with the children.
The Belton Fire and Police Departments brought fire trucks and police cars along with them and allowed the children to explore the vehicles. The children were also given the opportunity to try on life jackets, brought to them by the Texas Department of Parks and Wildlife.
Todd Spivey, a park ranger in Belton said that having the students personally interact with various professionals, really gave them the opportunity to discover career ideas beyond what they may have imagined.
"It gives them an idea of what's out there and what's available," Spivey said. "We just want to show them the different things they can do in life."
