Time Inc., the largest magazine publisher in the United States has announced on Wednesday that it will be selling subscriptions through Apple.
"For a magazine or brand like People or Time, a tablet will become an increasingly important part of the experience," Time Inc. chief executive Laura Lang said to The New York Times. "Our goal is to offer content where our consumers want to read it."
The two companies will allow subscribers to have access to up to 20 Time Inc. magazines, including Entertainment Weekly, Sports Illustrated, and People magazine. Customers can access the content through Apple's App Store newsstand section.
Although competitors of Time Inc. took to the idea of selling subscriptions through Apple quite a while ago, Time, Inc. stepped back and watched for a while, apprehensive of restrictions Apple imposed on magazine publishers.
The deal between Time Inc. and Apple is the largest Lang has had so far, as she most recently joined Time Inc. only five months prior.
Both companies are not willing to discuss the financial agreement between the two of them, however Apple's Senior Vice President for Internet software and services, Eddy Cue, said to the New York Times, "We offer the same terms to everyone no matter how big or how small.
The Apple newsstand sells over 5,000 magazine and newspapers and has over five million customers, most of whom are subscribers.
