American Idol's most recent winner, Phillip Phillips will be making a career comeback in the coming month. Following kidney surgery, the singer is set to make his first after-surgery performance debut for this year's July Fourth celebration on the National Mall.
In an interview done by The Associated Press, Phillips talked about his road to recovery.
"I'm getting better each day, so that's a good thing. I'm just walking around, getting my strength back together," he said. "It was tough, you know, those first few days, but I'm getting to where I can pick the guitar back up and write a little bit."
Phillips shared that the surgery was needed to help painful kidney blockage that made it diffucult to stand during the American Idol season. Throughout the competition, he underwent many other surgeries. His right kidney was having issues functioning, however he was not in need of a transplant.
In July, Phillips will perform his new single "Home" for an audience that's expected to include over 300,000 fans. The performance will take place on the U.S. Capitol lawn prior to the fireworks presentation. For those unable to make it to the capitol, the show will be broadcasted live on NPR and PBS.
The 21-year-old singer expressed his excitement and readiness to get back on the stage post recovery.
"It's probably the biggest thing I've ever done besides 'American Idol,'" he said. "I'm just excited to get out there and do my first real live performance since everything that's been going on."
Phillips will be one of many well recognized entertainment acts on the fourth, alongside country singer Josh Turner and the National Symphony Orchestra.
