Mayor Kevin Faulconer said that fans can rejoice that their favorite superheroes and celebrities will continue to gather under the San Diego sun.
Despite Los Angeles' efforts to attract one of the world's top conventions on comic books and pop culture, San Diego's Mayor Faulconer announced a forged deal with Comic-Con organizers that the convention will remain in town through 2018.
Comic-Con's history can be traced back in 1970 in San Diego where 300 people attended. It has become the longest convention running continuously ever since, a rare gathering of like-minded souls, raking in an estimated $136 million to the regional economy, according to Reuters.
This yearly event now draws more than 100,000 people, and has made a reputation as an important platform for Hollywood film companies as a platform in promoting their films, especially those that are tied with comic book themed flicks.
Comic-Con originally planned staying in San Diego until 2016, and local city officials were concerned that it might move to Los Angeles or Anaheim. The new agreement stipulates that the event will remain in San Diego up to 2018.
Comic-Con spokesman David Glanzer said that their group was pleased to stay in the city where this major annual event has grown up.
NZ Herald said that it was an anticipated deal, with hoteliers saying last week that the same number of discounted rooms during the convention will be maintained up to 2017 and 2018.
In a related story from the Los Angeles Daily News, the airline company Airbnb will triple its reservations for the upcoming event. Last year, the company booked close to 800 reservations for 1,800 guests in close to 700 locations.
They expect the figures to triple this year. The airline company has already booked almost 2,200 reservations for 5,800 guests.
WonderCon, a smaller sister event to Comic-Con will be held at the LA Convention Center in 2016. Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti said back in April that he hoped that Comic-Con might set up a home base in Los Angeles.
Comic-Con will kick off on July 8.
