Disney Pixar animated film "Brave" soared to the top of the movie box office over the weekend. The PG-rating movie scored $80 million in ticket sales around the world.
"Brave" stars the young Merida who is a skilled archer and daughter of King Fergus and Queen Elinor. The movie is set in the highlands of 10th century Scotland. As princess, Merida is faced with many restrictions but is determined to live her own life. She defies an age-old custom, causing chaos in her kingdom.
The 3D film raked in $66.7 million at domestic theaters from Friday through Sunday, plus $13.5 million from international markets. "Brave" topped new historical/horror mash up "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter" with little effort. It also knocked out another animated family film, "Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted" to number 2 after its two weeks in the top spot.
According to Reuters, "Brave" brings in the 13th consecutive Number 1 opening to Pixar, which has become Hollywood's most reliable studio during its 17-year history of making films. "Brave" is also the first Pixar film to feature a strong female as the lead character.
"Brave" cost about $185 million to make.
