Danny Ferry has been hired by the Atlanta Hawks to serve as the team's president of basketball operations and general manager. Although not much detail has been released in regards to the contract, the team does intend on keeping Ferry around for a while. The team plans for the new hire to be a "multi-year deal."
Ferry is the former vice president of basketball operations for the San Antonio Spurs and in the past was the general manager for the Cavaliers from 2005 to 2010. Ferry also played basketball from 1990 to 2003, where he played in 917 games.
"My family and I are thrilled to join the Hawks organization and Atlanta community," Ferry said in a statement. "There were many components that made this the right fit for me but clearly my confidence in the ownership group and their dedication to building a championship-caliber franchise was most important. They were committed to building with the right people and investing in critical areas for development; both essential elements if we want to create sustained success."
With the hiring of Ferry, people are becoming confident that Hawks owners have no plan of selling their franchise anymore.
Only a few months ago, the Hawks were almost sold to Alex Meruelo, a Southern California millionaire who could have been the NBA's first Latino owner. However, the deal which was worth $300 million went bad upon the NBA's approval process.
Ferry will take over Rick Sund's position, whose contract ended Sunday. However, Sund has mentioned that he would like to remain involved with the Hawks as an adviser.
