Keith Borum, a terminal cancer patient, and Nina Scott, his girlfriend of three years, exchanged their "I do's" at West Islip, New York's Good Samaritan Hospital.
Daily Mail reported that the nurses in the hospital helped make Borum's dream a reality. It was no secret, especially to the staff, that it was Borum's dream to save enough money to buy Nina an engagement ring and finally propose to her.
The nurses decided to raise funds for Borum's wedding. Christina Ware, a nurse from the hospital, said they also asked for donations and some donated flowers, cakes and other things needed for the wedding. Ware also revealed that she and her fellow nurses raised the money to buy the couple's wedding ring that's worth $400.
NY City.Today reported that the happy couple was surrounded by close friends and family when they said their wedding vows and to protect Borum against infections, the guests were required to wear blue medical gowns. Nina said that she doesn't have any favorite moment because "the whole event was great." Nina added, "The staff just outdid themselves. We couldn't have done it no better."
Keith Borum's cancer journey started 18 months ago when an ordinary emergency room visit turned out to be a life changing event. Borum was complaining of pain in the abdominal area. Further examination revealed that there was a cancerous tumor. It was later diagnosed as non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.
Mayo Clinic defined non-Hodgkin's lymphoma as a type of cancer that targets the body's lymphatic system. The lymphatic system is an integral part of the immune system. The symptoms of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) include swollen lymph nodes, weight loss, fever and night sweats.
Patients with NHL need to undergo several treatment procedures such as chemotherapy, radiation therapy and, sometimes, even stem cell transplant. NHL usually develops in people with weak immune systems.
