"Chloe" actress Amanda Seyfried recently stunned the world after boldly speaking out against gender pay inequality in the entertainment industry. The 29-year-old "Veronica Mars" star underscored the substantial wage discrepancies between male and female actors.
Although a lot of celebrities are advocating efforts against gender inequality, which remains as one of the major societal issues globally, Amanda Seyfried, who starred in several films such as "Chloe," "Dear John" and "Mamma Mia!" among others, revealed that equal pay for women in Hollywood is still a long way off, The Sydney Morning Herald has learned.
"A few years ago, on one of my big-budget films, I found I was being paid 10 percent of what my male co-star was getting, and we were pretty even in status," she admitted, News.com.au quoted. "I think people think, because I'm easygoing and game to do things, I'll just take as little as they offer. But it's not about how much you get, it's about how fair it is. You have to decide if you're willing to walk away from something, especially as a woman.
Looking back on Amanda Seyfried's IMDB credits, it's really surprising to learn that the "Chloe" actress is claiming she's underpaid compared to her costars since she had several prolific projects under her belt, Vanity Fair noted. No wonder Seyfried is disappointed and is boldly speaking out against gender wage inequality now.
Due to Hollywood's ridiculously significant wage gap, Amanda Seyfried, who was praised for playing interesting roles in films such as "Chloe" and "Jennifer's Body," is the latest star to join the bandwagon of female celebrities protesting against gender pay inequality. The increasing movement of actresses include Oscar-winner Patricia Arquette, Kristen Stewart, Carey Mulligan, Jennifer Lawrence, who was significantly underpaid compared to her costars in "American Hustle," and Charlize Theron.
"It's time to have wage equality once and for all," Arquette said at this year's Oscar Awards.
Meanwhile, gender wage inequality in Hollywood has indeed been rampant. In fact, a significant disparity can be seen whenever Forbes magazine lists the industry's highest paid actors and actresses. While actors earn as much as $465 million, actresses only earn $181 million. These statistics difference also rang true in television actors and actresses.
With "Chloe" star Amanda Seyfried's exposé, hopefully no actress will ever have to experience gender wage inequality again and Hollywood's double standards in wages will finally be eradicated for good.
