Apple's iPhone celebrates its 5th birthday today.
Five years ago the iPhone, one of Apple's biggest devices, made its debut. The iPhone changed the mobile phone market forever.
The original device went on sale in 2007, giving customers not only a phone experience they had never had before, but also giving them a dent in their pockets. Customers could purchase the phone for a large price of $499 for the 4GB model and $599 for the 8GB model.
However, not everyone was sold on the features Apple said its iPhone could bring customers.
Bloomberg News columnist Matthew Lynn wrote at the time that the iPhone was "nothing more than a luxury bauble that will appeal to a few gadget freaks." He continued, "Apple will sell a few to its fans, but the iPhone won't make a long-term mark on the industry."
Apple has not only gone above and beyond reaching "gadget freaks," it has created a fan base that spans from children of all ages to senior citizens worldwide.
Five years and millions of sales later, the word iPhone cannot be mentioned without receiving an enormous reaction.
"The iPhone ushered in a whole new era where people were carrying a device that was truly personal," Calvin Carter, chief executive of Bottle Rocket Apps, told the LATimes in an interview.
The iPhone has undeniably created a revolution and an unprecedented following, with no intent on stopping.
Happy Birthday, iPhone.
