R&B Singer Lauryn Hill pleaded guilty Friday to charges brought against her for dodging federal taxes. Hill refused to pay taxes on over $1.5 million earned over a three year span.
Hill appeared in U.S. District Court in Newark, and admitted to not paying taxes from 2005 to 2007. She could be facing up to three years in prison.
Although Hill refused to comment after Friday's hearing, attorney Nathan Hochman stated in court that Hill did plan on paying back the tax money she owed.
Hill admitted to not having paid taxes on $818,000 earned in 2005, $222,000 in 2006 and $761,000 in 2007, all earned by four corporations owned by the singer.
The mother of six began her singing career as a member of The Fugees and decided to go solo in 1998.
Following her much celebrated album "The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill," in addition to her eight Grammies, Hill disappeared from the music scene. She took time off to raise her children alongside husband Rohan Marley, the son of famous reggae singer Bob Marley.
Hill claims that she has not paid taxes since leaving the public eye to assure the safety of herself and her family.
